Customised Silver Kada with Name - How It's Made & Price Guide

When ordering a custom silver kada, you get one of two outcomes: a gorgeous kada with a name engraving that may last for years or one that may begin to fade faster over time.

The major distinction often lies in the engraving method, not the quality of the silver.

The sad fact is that there are very few online jewellery stores that tell you what method of engraving they actually use.

This is where this guide comes in.

By the time you finish reading this, you will know the basic differences between laser and CNC engraving, which method is best for what situation, as well as what you should expect to pay for one and how long it should actually take to create a true custom kada.

The Two Methods Used In Customised Silver Kada With Name

There are two forms of engraving – laser and CNC (Computer Numerical Control) engraving – both of which are commonly used by jewellers in creating their products.

While the techniques look similar in photographs, they work completely differently on an individual’s wrist over the course of years.

Laser Engraving

In laser engraving, a concentrated beam of light is used to burn the surface of the silver.

It is fast.

The line markings created through laser engraving are extremely precise; under magnification, you may see a very clean finish.

However, because this technique does not physically carve or chip metal like a cutting tool would, the depth of the engraving is relatively shallow.

Laser engraving marks the surface rather than cutting deeply into the metal.

The depth is significant when considering how engravings are likely to survive wear and tear.

Each time an individual wears their kada, friction from the skin and clothing can gradually wear away the surface.

After continuous wear, the shallowness of the engraving makes the edges of the name appear soft or rounded.

CNC Engraving

CNC engraving removes metal with a rotating cutting tool and is usually deeper than laser engraving.

This leaves clean, vertical sidewalls.

Since the metal is physically extracted, the letters usually stay clearer for longer, even with normal wear.

However, CNC takes more time than laser, especially on a rounded surface or a more elaborate design.

This is the reason some jewellers use lasers to engrave.

Laser engraving allows for a quicker production time.

CNC is often the preferred method for silver kada name engraving, particularly when not much intricate work is involved.

Laser engraving works much better for symbols, geometric shapes, and decorative aspects of a kada.

At Shubh Jewellers, we use CNC for longer-lasting name engraving and laser for decorative, sharper detailing.

The Pricing Part

It costs more to get a personalised silver kada with your name engraved than an identical, plain kada without engraving.

Below is a breakdown of the primary charges involved.

Base Metal Cost

The base metal cost depends on the amount of silver used.

For example, a 50-gram kada made from 999 pure silver at the current rate of silver, approx ₹2,780 per 10 grams, would have the following raw material cost:

50 g × ₹278 per g = ₹13,900

After including the making charges, this cost will lie somewhere between ₹18,000 and ₹22,000 (this can vary as per the silver rates), depending on the design complexity.

Additional Engraving Charges

Then comes the additional engraving price.

It is determined by:

  • Type of name engraving (e.g., bold Roman or cursive)

  • Surface profile of the kada (flat or round)

  • Engraving depth

This may range between ₹800 and ₹2,500.

Example Pricing

  • A bold Roman-engraved name on a flat 50-gram kada may cost around ₹800

  • A Punjabi-style silver kada with a lengthy cursive name along with a date engraving may cost ₹2,500 due to the additional detailing

At our online store, lighter personalised kadas often start at roughly ₹9,800, while a customised 50 g name kada silver price may range between ₹24,000 and ₹28,000.

As for heavier kadas, e.g., 100 grams or above, there will be extra making charges for premium engravings.

The Turnaround Time

Turnaround time varies widely, and many times it can be difficult to predict.

However, we do receive many urgent orders (the majority of these laser-engraved products), and now you know why.

If you place an order for a CNC-engraved product, the turnaround time is typically 3-5 business days, due to multiple factors, including:

  • Confirming your design

  • CNC machine processing

  • Quality inspection

  • Packaging and dispatch

If you are ordering a custom kada for a specific occasion (birthday, anniversary, wedding), we suggest ordering it well in advance.
